27 years ago today, I was making my way to boot camp to start a new chapter of my life.

27 years ago, I said bye to my family, my home, my friends and chased a new dream. A dream that would lead to earning Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medals (2), a Navy “E” Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), Sea Service Deployment Ribbons (2), Expeditionary Award, Golden Dragon, Sailor of the Quarter, Sailor of the Year and I was “CAPped” to 2nd class.

I also earned my bachelor’s degree while in the Navy, used my GI Bill to pay for my MBA, and fell in love with the amazing man I have called my husband for 18 years and have two beautiful children with.

I was taught to be braver than I ever thought I could be. I was taught to work smarter not harder. I was taught how to use my voice to speak up when I saw wrong in the world. I was taught to protect those who could not protect themselves. I was taught how to use and respect my weapon and to be ready for anything. I was taught to respect the chain of command.

I volunteered for the Navy in 1997 because I love this great country, because I believe in what she stands for, because I wanted to be a part of something bigger, because I am a PROUD American.

Today I look back and reflect on the pain, the joy, the laughs, the friendships and hardships and the reward of it ALL.

I would never, in my wildest dreams think that the girl I was in 1997 would ever become the woman I am today!

To ALL that have supported me in the last 27 years, and ALL my family that have been there for me my entire life – THANK YOU!

Thank you for helping me become the woman I am today.
