State Representative Dave Paul (D-Oak Harbor) sent out the following email from his campaign account on Wed., Jun. 14, 2023.

May was a busy month. The Legislature had a one-day session on May 16th to pass Senate Bill 5536. The bipartisan law provides reforms and new funding to help individuals suffering from substance-use disorder.

Before and after the Special Session, I’ve been meeting with constituents throughout the district. Here’’’s a quick update on a few of those activities.

Addressing homelessness

Community partnerships are critical for providing a range of options to address homelessness in our community. A great example of this is Martha’s Place, which recently opened in Mount Vernon thanks to the good work of Catholic Community Services, the city of Mount Vernon, Skagit County, and our state. I’ve visited Martha’s Place twice since it opened in April, and it’s already making a difference in the lives of many in our community. I also recently toured Recovery Café Skagit, which provides support for individuals recovering from addiction or homelessness. Recovery Café is another example of public-private partnerships, and it is funded by a combination of Skagit County resources, state funds, and private donations. Thanks to Alan Muia for the tour, and you can learn more about their work at Home | Recovery Cafe Skagit (rcskagit.org)

Public Safety

First responders play a critical role in keeping our community safe. Last year, I worked closely with Central Whidbey Island Fire & Rescue to develop a proposal to have our state construction budget help finish projects started with local dollars. I’m excited that the work paid off, and we secured $2.75 million to help complete the construction of Station #53 outside Coupeville. It was terrific to see Chief Jerry Helm and his team at the Coupeville Memorial Day parade.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend my town halls at the Camano Island library and in Mount Vernon. I’ll be having more town halls and community coffees this summer.

As always, it’s an honor to serve.

Sincerely,

As always, it’s an honor to serve as your state representative.
