Background and Meeting Topic
- The City has made significant progress on the Critical Areas Ordinance Update since beginning the process last year.
- However, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife has recently produced new guidance on how cities should be protecting regulated streams.
- Addressing this new guidance is the last major item the City must address before adopting the ordinance.
- City staff and the City’s consultant team will present a new addendum to the 2022 Best Available Science Report to address the new State stream guidance
- The addendum will also outline several options to consider for implementing the new guidance.
The City of Langley is conducting a review and update of the Critical Areas Ordinance this year, prior to the next required Comprehensive Plan update in 2025. As a part of this process, the City held a community meeting on October 19, 2022 from 6pm-7pm via zoom. The agenda and zoom link for the meeting can be found here.
Background
Langley completed the required periodic review and update of its Comprehensive Plan in 2018. Due to various constraints and circumstances, a review and update of the Critical Areas Ordinance was not included in the 2018 Comprehensive Plan update as is required. Staff intend to conduct a review and update of the Critical Areas Ordinance in 2022, prior to the next required Comprehensive Plan update in 2025. This will also include an evaluation of the geologically hazardous areas regulations in the context of climate change.
