At the end of a long day of campaigning, fundraising and dropping dinner off on base for my husband, I forgot food for myself. Oops.
Military families make a sacrifice every day. The least we can do as a military town is make Oak Harbor a great duty station experience.
It starts with housing. The current plans in District 2 are underwhelming, and without a dedicated focus on initiatives that invite development, it’s going to hurt a lot more than it already has for our workforce— nurses, military, teachers and more— trying to move here.
There are lots of solutions. Tax incentives for developers, zoning adaptations, ADUs— even social and eco housing could be options.
If we want to end the housing crisis here, we can’t just sprinkle in some new development when it’s convenient for local officials. We are at least a decade behind in building. It’s frustrating watching the same inaction and apathy lead to the same results.
I’m not saying it will be easy. I’m not saying it will be fast. But that’s why we need to act now, and why more of the same won’t suffice.
If you have been affected by the housing crisis here like my family has, send me a message. Tell me your story. I’m listening.
