Sequim is my hometown. I remember this exact day 25 years ago. Leading up to it many local business owners were concerned that by not forcing people to drive through the town it would cause many of the businesses to fail. Even sometime after that the vocal concerns continued.

The economy of sequim has changed drastically in 25 years, and business has thrived. Change can often be hard, especially when emotion overtakes logic. But thoughtful long term planning is key to a local healthy economy. When I visit sequim I am always in awe of the changes. Even more impressive I feel those changes have happened while still keeping the overall “character” of the town. Yes no doubt there are some of those who have lived there for 50 years “when there was only one traffic light” who feel the town changed to much. But change is going to happen, planning for the future while maintaining what makes the town unique is essential.

All these surveys and plans we are working on in Oak Harbor should help to foster a similar environment here.

Twenty-five years ago, the way locals and visitors traveled in and around Sequim changed significantly with the opening of the U.S. Highway 101 Sequim bypass.
