Many students and staff paused Wednesday morning to join the community in remembering and honoring those who died during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

While some across the district observed a moment of silence, students from Stanwood High School and Port Susan Middle School lined the streets along the city’s annual procession route with American flags in-hand. Thank you.

At 10 a.m. Wednesday, Stanwood Police Department and North County Fire/EMS personnel led a patriotic display along Highway 532 near Station 99 at Pioneer Highway east toward Stanwood High School and back west by Port Susan Middle School. After returning to Station 99, first responders held a September 11 memorial service for the community under the giant American flag waving proudly from a ladder truck extended high into the sky.

Throughout the day Wednesday, passersby can also see a symbolic flag display surrounding the intersection of Pioneer Highway and Highway 532. There are 343 flags representing the firefighters who lost their lives in the World Trade Center towers and 82 flags honoring the fallen law enforcement personnel.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed on that tragic day when terrorist-piloted planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.

On Camano Island, a September 11 memorial installed by Camano Island Fire and Rescue can be viewed at Freedom Park.

“This is an opportunity for our students, staff, families, and community to remember those who serve and honor the sacrifices made,” Stanwood-Camano School District Superintendent Dr. Deborah Rumbaugh said.
