CAMANO: School board hears high school update, discusses policy revisions

Stanwood Camano News

The Stanwood-Camano School Board heard an update on student success at Stanwood High and discussed policy at its Tuesday, Oct. 7, meeting.

Items discussed included policies dealing with the distribution of information, student discipline, and interviews and interrogations of students on school premises.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Stanwood High School Principal Mike Washington and CTE Director Ross Short presented a school update.

They Said It

Director Steve King voiced concerns around changes to the discipline policy, stating he felt there were “radical changes” and the document warrants a potential study session.

Superintendent Ryan Ovenell said that while the proposed document includes a lot of red text and changes, the purpose is to be in line with laws, as well as the Washington State School Directors’ Association.

“This is a required change; we follow WSSDA’s three tiers of change,” Ovenell said. “This was actually recommended back in September of 2024 for a change by WSSDA.”

Ovenell said that, in general, the recommended policy changes from WSSDA fall in line with compliance with federal law.

Ovenell said the district has spent time studying the implications of practices to make the changes.
