Message from Island County Commissioner, Janet St Clair

Dear Friends,

As we begin the New Year, we continue with our advocacy for a county and state that values people over politics as we work together to achieve progress on healthy communities, strong local resources, and regional priorities.  The Board of County Commissioners has been busy and you can always follow our work here.

I was honored to be appointed by Governor Bob Ferguson to serve on his transportation subcommittee for his transition.  As such, we were honored to host then Governor-Elect Ferguson, the subcommittee and state leaders on ferries to a meeting at the Clinton Community Hall.  I want to thank the Mayors, EDC and Chamber of Commerce Directors, Ferry Advisory Councils, and other advocates who attended.  We had a unique opportunity to listen to policy conversations and funding to improve our ferries.  I would like to invite anyone interested to attend “Fix our Ferries Lobby Day” in Olympia on Feb. 5 & 6.  You can learn more about our coalition of city and county leaders and sign up at www.fixourferries.org.  We have scheduled appointments with Senator Muzzall on the 5th and Reps Paul and Shavers on Feb 6.  If you would like to join me at those appointments, email me at j.stclair@islandcountywa.gov.

I have also been working hard to finalize the maps and secure partnerships to expand internet access to under and unserved areas of Island County.   With $1.2B in federal broadband funding being distributed through Washington State Broadband Office, we want to be sure to leverage that investment for our communities.  A big shout out and thank you to our broadband coordinator, Cody Bakken who has been instrumental in this process.  At this point, it appears we have providers willing to bid on all four maps in Island County and we are working to support their efforts.  Stay tuned as the final deadline approaches and we will have more details.  If you have questions, you can email Cody at broadband@islandcountywa.gov.

We continue our advocacy efforts in Olympia and will be working on the county legislative priorities for transportation, behavioral health, veterans and our capital projects.  We continue to monitor efforts to address affordable housing and new legislation to improve our public defense.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Warm regards (cuz it’s cold outside),
Janet St Clair, Island County Commissioner District 3
