Island County Commissioners – Work Session

May 18, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Island County

The Island County Commissioners meet in Work Session routinely on the first three Wednesdays of each month (unless otherwise scheduled). Work sessions are public meetings which provide an opportunity in an informal workshop format for the Board to review in detail ongoing issues with individual departments and elected officials. This time also is used for the Commissioners to meet with other agencies, committees and groups to discuss specific topics of mutual interest. Items are typically first reviewed at Work Session before being scheduled on the agenda for the Commissioners’ regular business meetings held on Tuesdays. The agenda for the work session is at this link.

Topics of interest include:

  • Public Works: changes to the county’s right-of-way at Ships Haven Drive north of Freeland; an agreement with the US Navy regarding access and construction on Keystone Hill Road at the Outlying Field; and a discussion of solid waste containers.
  • General Services Administration: a discussion of the adoption of an Island County Data Governance Policy.
  • Treasurer’s Office: Treasurer Wanda Grone leads a discussion of the May Treasurer’s report; a discussion of office hours at the Treasurer’s Office; and a request to schedule a Tax Title Properties sale, to dispose of properties acquired by the county because no one bid on them at a tax foreclosure sale.
  • Public Health: discussion of an amendment to the contract with the State Department of Health; and an amendment to the Lead Entity Budget for Island County to receive an additional $60,000 to act on behalf of the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office for various projects.
  • Commissioners’ Office: an Island County Economic Development presentation; a proposed resolution to support a regional organization of counties in their partnership with the Washington State Association of Counties for various services.
  • Human Services: presentation for signature of two letters: one in support of a project renewal application for Skagit County to administer a homeownership assistance program, and an award letter to Shelter Resources to develop affordable housing on county-owned property at 820 N Oak Harbor St in Oak Harbor; and a contract with the Low Income Housing Institute for $1.5 million in matching funds to purchase existing property (Harbor Inn, 1606 E Main St, Freeland) for affordable housing.
  • Planning and Community Development: a discussion on shoreline permitting in the flood plain.
