State Representative Dave Paul (D-Oak Harbor), sent out the following email from his campaign account on Mon., May 16, 2022.

Dear Friends,

Many of you have asked me about the Supreme Court document that appears to be a majority opinion to overturn Roe v. Wade. The document is truly alarming, and it is a fundamental threat to our nation. The Supreme Court is not only poised to strike down Roe v. Wade, but the opinion sets the stage for a full-scale assault on the right to privacy.

The ramifications of the opinion are stunning. Not only will abortion rights be quickly restricted in much of the United States, but the opinion opens the door for states to limit access to contraception and restrict LGBTQ rights. The opinion provides a path for states to return to the days when both abortion and LGBTQ relationships were criminalized.

The opinion is so alarming because it attacks the constitutional framework for the right to privacy and systematically rebukes established case law that protects our rights from government intrusion. I know from my conversations with you and thousands of other residents across our region that this opinion does not reflect our values.

I’m proud that Washington residents approved initiatives to protect reproductive rights in 1991 and legalize gay marriage in 2012. We must remain vigilant–and work to ensure future legislatures do not try to rescind these key protections.

You know my commitment to both fight for the rights of women and the LGBTQ community—and to work with Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike for what is best for our state. There is wide, bipartisan consensus from across the political spectrum that Americans—all Americans—deserve the right to privacy.

I will file for reelection this week. Let’s stand up together and not let a radical minority destroy 50 years of progress for families, women, and the LGBTQ community. Please help us get the word out that there are reasonable people who can be both principled and represent swing districts.

As always, it is an honor to serve as your representative.

Sincerely,

Dave
