School Board elects new officers, honors Shining Star

The Stanwood-Camano School Board voted on a new board president, vice president, and legislative representative during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025.

The board also presented a Shining Star honor to Utsalady Elementary fifth-grader Mia Utchenko and received both the School Improvement Plan and Annual Action Plan from Utsalady Elementary principal Dr. Michael Hanna.

The meeting opened with Superintendent Ryan Ovenell administering the Oath of Office to recently elected board members John Russell and Charlotte Murry. Russell represents District 1, which includes the southeast portion of the school district and the Warm Beach area. Murry represents District 2, which covers the southern half of Camano Island.

At the first meeting of December each year, the board selects its officers. The board chose Miranda Evans as board president and Steve King as vice president. Murry was also selected to serve the remaining year of the board’s two-year legislative representative term.

Executive Director of Business Services Ruth Floyd provided the October Financial Report, Transportation Director Angie O’Connor presented the annual Transportation Report, and Superintendent Ovenell shared an update on his first 100 Days as Superintendent.
