On Thursday, SWMS Cougars did not throw away their shot!

When the South Whidbey Schools Foundation provided the 8th grade US History students with tickets to see Hamilton at the Paramount in Seattle, the students rallied behind this opportunity to see the live musical. They spent the weeks prior learning their history, writing, and performing “battle rap” and the “spoken word”. “Battle rap” is when two or more rappers compete on a topic to see who has the best verses. The “spoken word” is a term for poetry that is performed aloud, rather than read on a page. It can include poetry readings, slams, hip hop, jazz, and more. They wrote and performed on multiple topics from “Most Distracting in History Class” to “Missing HW”.
Mrs. Richards, history teacher who applied for the SWSF grant, said the students were “SO GOOD. They did exactly what we asked of them, were respectful to each other, the bus driver, the people we encountered, the Paramount staff, and to other students. There were hundreds of kids from over 35 schools there so the chaos potential was high, but our kids nailed it. They were engaged and despite my many warnings, some of them even sang along to their favorite songs;) The Hamilton Hype Squad energy was next level.”
