South Whidbey Elementary fifth graders in Ms. Simmons’ class are connecting with peers across the country through a nationwide postcard exchange that blends writing, geography, and curiosity. As part of this engaging project, students sent 34 Washington-themed postcards to fifth grade classrooms in other states through a national postcard exchange network discovered by Ms. Simmons. Participating classes signed up via a shared spreadsheet, creating a web of classrooms eager to learn from one another.
This was truly a team effort. Students worked together to write messages, address envelopes, and mail the postcards, proudly sharing highlights of Washington’s culture, geography, and community. The anticipation is growing each day as students check the mailbox for responses. So far, one postcard has arrived from Vermont, sparking excitement and conversations about the many more connections still to come.
