OLYMPIA… Asher Long, a homeschool student from Arlington, recently spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate in Olympia.

Long was one of 19 students who served as Senate pages for the fourth week of the 2026 legislative session.

He was sponsored by Sen. Ron Muzzall, R-Oak Harbor, who represents the 10th Legislative District, which includes Island County and parts of Skagit and Snohomish counties.

“I’m glad that Asher enjoyed his time paging with us,” said Muzzall. “He was very eager to help with any task and learn more about the legislative process. I sensed he was excited to work and participate at the Capitol.”

The Senate Page Program provides an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working at the Legislature. Students transport documents between offices, as well as deliver messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a legislative mock session.

“My favorite part of being on the floor [of the Senate chamber] was getting to hold the flag towards the Senate dais,” said Long. “I was told this program gives you opportunities you’ll never get to do again, and I wanted to make sure every decision I made was beneficial to my experience.”

Long enjoys many outdoor activities, including snowboarding, jiujitsu, wakeboarding and cliff jumping. Long was recommended the program by many of his friends who used to page, and with his strong interest in politics decided to pursue that interest further.  Long enjoyed meeting many of the senators and working on his mock bill, which focused on animal rights and bans on certain dog breeds.

Long, 16, is the son of Summer and Lucas Long of Arlington.
