Island County Commissioner Janet St. Clair (D-Camano Island) sent the following newsletter on Thu., Nov. 10, 2022.
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I want to be sure all are aware that County offices will be closed this Friday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day. As we honor those who have served, I thought some might be curious about this day.
“It all started on Nov. 11, 1921, when an unknown soldier killed during World War I was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Exactly one year earlier, both France and Great Britain created similar memorials for a soldier of their own. Then known as Armistice Day, November 11 was chosen as a day of memorial because it marked the end of fighting in World War I — on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.” (USA Today; November 10, 2022)
My father and grandfather both served. Many other cousins and uncles have also served. While I come from a family of veterans, I have not served and so I double my appreciation and respect for those who have. I wish you all a safe and restful day in observance of Veterans Day. Please take a moment to express your appreciation to those who have sacrificed for this nation and for their families.
As all know, it has been a busy and challenging time with both elections, our ongoing work, and the recent storm. Serving you has remained a priority and a privilege. Mark your calendars as I will be hosting a winter preparedness Town Hall on December 1st as a hybrid in-person/virtual event. In addition to bringing in presenters, I will take time to do a year end summary on our County work.
I will be out of the office next week for a County Leaders Conference with Washington State Association of Counties. I will then be on vacation for a week. I will have limited access to phone or email. Please reach out to staff if you have any needs. They can be reached at (360) 679-7354.
In gratitude,
Janet St. Clair
Island County Commissioner – District 3
