Election Update! (Results as of 11/28/2022)

ICD is pleased to report that out of our endorsed/preferred candidates, only one of our candidates is likely to lose with one headed for a likely recount! The races for 10th LD State Rep. Pos. 1 and Island County Assessor have been extremely close, so we’re monitoring closely for any recount efforts and results from Canvassing Boards. Below are the results as of 11/28:

U.S. Senate: Patty Murray (D.) – 57.15%, Tiffany Smiley (R.) – 42.63%

U.S. House (WA’s Second District): Rick Larsen (D.) – 60.07%, Dan Matthews (R.) – 39.75%

Secretary of State: Steve Hobbs (D.) – 49.78%, Julie Anderson (NP.) – 45.82%

10th LD State Rep., Pos. 1: Clyde Shavers (D.) – 50.05%, Greg Gilday (R.) – 49.81% – Shavers leading, recount possible from state or by Gilday campaign.

10th LD State Rep., Pos. 2: Dave Paul (D.) – 52.07%, Karen Lesetmoe (R.) – 47.83%

Island County Assessor: T.J. Kubisiak (NP.) – 49.85%, Kelly Todd Mauck (R.) – 49.77% – State or campaign recounts possible, only 32 votes separate Kubisiak and Mauck.

Island County Auditor: Sheilah Crider (R.) – 54.72%, Barbara Fuller (D.) – 45.19%

Island County Clerk: Debra Van Pelt (D.) – 59.41%, Dierdre Butler (NP.) – 40.3%

Island County Commissioner, Dis. 3: Janet St. Clair (D.) – 55.13%, Timothy S. Hazelo (R.) – 44.76%

Island County Treasurer: Tony Lam (D.) – 57.18%, Richard MacQuarrie (R.) – 42.72%

We are so proud of all of our candidates, volunteers, and voters who made this possible! Thank you for the tremendous work that was put in this cycle. We flipped some county seats and are on track to flip a legislative seat. If this election taught us one thing, it’s that EVERY VOTE COUNTS!

Reorganization Meeting Information:

Official Call to Meeting by ICDCC Chair Joseph J. Busig:

The ICDCC Reorganization Meeting for the 2022-2024 Term

Thurs. Dec. 15, 2022 at 7:00 P.M. via Zoom Conference Call

Dear Democrats of Island County,

My name is Joseph Busig, Chair of the Island County Democratic Central Committee (ICDCC) also known as the Island County Democrats (ICD). You are getting this email because you are a newly elected PCO, a current Member, or on our mailing list. I’m reaching out because on December 15, 2022 (12/15/2022) at 7:00 P.M. via Zoom we will be having our Reorganization (or ReOrg) meeting.

This meeting happens every even election year, every two years, to elect the leadership for county and legislative district Democratic organizations. ReOrg also provides a chance for the central committee to revisit the organization’s bylaws, standing rules of order, special rules, or other governing documents to amend them should there be a desire to do so. It is important to note that newly elected PCOs are needed to establish a quorum, elect officers, and conduct any other business. If there is no quorum of elected PCOs, we cannot hold a ReOrg meeting and by extension function as an organization. Your participation is crucial.

The Executive Board officer positions that will be open for election are Chair, First Vice Chair, Second Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, First State Committee-Member, and Second State Committee-Member. PCOs and Members are encouraged to run for any Executive Board position via floor nomination, self nomination, or nomination from the Nominating Committee. Current Executive Board officers are also allowed to seek reelection or to seek election for another position. The tasks and responsibilities of each officer are listed in our bylaws. Please consider running and reaching out for more information if you’re interested!

The state party has offered local Democratic organizations who are running their ReOrg meetings up to $1,000 for making our space accessible. We actively commit to ensure all can participate regardless of any disabilities or technological barriers. Please let me know by December 5 (12/5) if you are in need of accommodation or require technological assistance so we can ask for the appropriate funds as well as coordinate with you.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding ReOrg, ICDCC, if you’re interested in running for a position, if you’d like to see any party documents, or if you’re curious about the process as a whole. I look forward to seeing some new faces! Stay safe, stay well, and have a happy upcoming holiday season!

Message from US Representative, Rick Larsen

The last two weeks, Congress came back into session for the first time since the election. The Capitol was buzzing with the energy of our newly-elected colleagues, like Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, and those who won hard-fought races, like Rep. Kim Schrier and Sen. Patty Murray.

So, let me start by thanking you once again for all your hard work and dedication in returning me to Congress, helping Patty, Kim and Marie – and so many others across the country – get across the finish line.

The Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives, by a very, very narrow margin.  That means that we are going to face an unending series of votes on bills that run counter to our Democratic values.  I am not afraid to vote no.  But I will also never stop looking for opportunities to work across the aisle to get things done and make life better for Washingtonians and ALL Americans.

One more thing: After twenty years, Nancy Pelosi is stepping aside as our Democratic leader. She has been one of the most effective legislative leaders in American history.  It has been an honor and a privilege to join her in guaranteeing affordable health care for millions of Americans, providing relief to working families through recessions and the pandemic, and making historic investments to rebuild America and tackle climate change.

In this season of thanksgiving, I offer you my deepest gratitude and appreciation.  Thank you, for all that you do.

Rick
