As you watch this video update from Superintendent Ryan Ovenell, we want to share a few key reminders and updates for today, Friday, Dec. 12 …
Yesterday, our transportation team was able to safely navigate around road closures and all schools operated on schedule. Conditions changed overnight. Skagit River levels continued rising near the tops of the levees, stressing the diking system to potentially vulnerable levels and creating possibly unsafe conditions for the Stanwood Elementary and Stanwood Middle School area.
While current forecasts suggest the levee system is expected to hold and we do not anticipate widespread floodwaters in downtown Stanwood, today’s situation creates too much uncertainty. Out of an abundance of caution, all schools are closed.
As a reminder, there is no out-of-district transportation today, and all facility rentals and community use of schools are canceled today.
District staff are continuing to monitor river levels throughout the day, especially as the next high tide approaches later this morning. While conditions remain stable, we will keep families informed if anything changes.
We are still evaluating high school athletic practices and two school events scheduled for this evening:
- The Arlington-Stanwood boys basketball game may still be played tonight. Stanwood High School and the district will share an update after 12 p.m. about practices and the game.
- Saratoga School will communicate directly with families after 12 p.m. with an update about this evening’s planned Maker’s Market.
If you or your family need resources due to impacts from flooding, please reach out to us via email at SCSDinfo@stanwood.wednet.edu or 360-629-1200.
Thank you again for your continued patience and understanding as we work closely with our city and county partners to ensure student, staff, and community safety. We will continue to share updates as needed throughout the day.
