An update from our crews in LA: They’re currently attached to the Palisades Fire and working VERY long days. Assistant Chief Allen is also in LA training as a strike team leader. He’s pictured here with popular Food Network chef Tyler Florence, who is in the LA area working with World Central Kitchen to feed first responders fighting the LA fires.

We’ve also heard some questions about why and how we can afford to send crews out of state.

First – We only send a crew and an engine if we have the staffing and equipment to support their absence. Fortunately we have a great team of career, part-time, and volunteer firefighters who can fill in for our crews in LA. The engine we sent is also a backup engine – one we don’t typically use day-to-day.

Second – Who pays for all this? CalFire pays for it. Our engine undergoes an inspection and CalFire mechanics make any needed repairs before the engine goes into service in California. CalFire pays us $3,714 for each day the engine is on deployment. If that engine is deployed for 14 days, it will make more than $50,000 – and receive maintenance if needed. We will put the money that engine earns into our capital fund – and that’s money that goes toward replacing apparatus in the future. It’s a solid financial strategy and one way we help reduce the burden on taxpayers.
