Marie Shimada (D-Freeland), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 1

Marie Shimada (D-Freeland), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 1, posted this on her Facebook page on .

As usual, last weekend was booked solid, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Oak Harbor meeting with local residents and attending the Veterans Resource Fair, where I ran into my friend Rachel Oswalt, host of the “Your Story Doesn’t End Here” podcast.

Veterans resources and support are priorities for me, and I don’t always have the opportunity to discuss these issues in detail. Not only am I the grandchild of two WWII veterans, including a purple heart, but I spent over a year of my law school tenure interning in a pro bono legal clinic for veterans where we worked on discharge upgrades and disability appeals. With Island County having the most veterans per capita in WA, I look forward to continuing a career of service for our community’s veterans.
