The Stanwood-Camano School District posted this item in the news section of their website on Apr. 19, 2023.

The Stanwood-Camano School Board heard a report on the 2023-24 budget and the K-8 reading and writing materials adoption during the regular board meeting on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

The budget update discussed the status of drafting the 2023-24 school district budget, which the school board will host a public hearing about in August. Learn more about the district budget on our Finance webpage.

The board also heard a report from the Teaching and Learning Department about the nearly yearlong process of updating the district’s K-8 reading and writing materials.

The district last adopted new reading and writing materials in 2009.

Dozens of staff members participated in analyzing and testing different curriculums before recommending the school board approve adopting Amplify reading and writing materials for grades K-5 and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt reading and writing for grades 6-8. The school board unanimously voted to approve the adoptions at the meeting.

Amplify reading and writing materials were chosen in part because of its research based on the Science of Reading. Along with the embedded foundational skills that support students in the primary years, it also provides rigorous writing instruction throughout its units. Find more about Amplify HERE

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt reading and writing materials were chosen because in part of their alignment to common core state standards, use of data, and teacher and support. Middle school adoption team members also appreciated its alignment to the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support work already underway in the district.
