Island County Commissioner Melanie Bacon (D-Langley) wrote a Sound Off column for the Whidbey News-Times responding to a letter to the editor which charged that former County Assessor Mary Engle was not qualified for the Planning Director position. Bacon’s column appeared in the paper’s Jul. 9, 2022 edition.

They Said It

Commissioner Melanie Bacon: I opposed the hiring of Mary Engle as planning director for many of the same reasons the letter writer identified. I was outvoted by my colleagues, and she was appointed to the job.

I was wrong. Mary Engle is performing an excellent job as Island County planning director.

Today the citizens are well-served by the Island County Department of Planning and Community Development. Mary Engle deserves credit for that, not censure.
