Island County Grant Supports Greenbank Farm Pond Rehabilitation

The Port of Coupeville has received support from Island County’s Rural Economic Development Fund (RCEDF).

The program offers grants to local governments and port districts to help finance public facilities that support businesses that create and retain jobs.

The Port is using this grant to improve Greenbank Farm’s pond, which is a landmark tourist attraction and place of refuge for island residents. The pond is also an important water source for Farm structures in the event of a fire.

Funds for this program derive from a rebate to Island County from Washington state’s share of 6.5% of sales-and-use taxes. The fund has no additional tax for the consumer.

Island County Board of Commissioners approved an allocation of $112,500 from the RCEDF. Additional funds for pond repairs come from federal grants managed by the EPA.

Pond Rehab Next Steps

The initial pond repair assessment delivered good news: there is less sediment than anticipated. So, a revised design work plan was created. The focus is to replace a failing clay water supply pipe.
