Camano Fire will send five more new hires to the Snohomish County Fire Training Academy this September – along with one department firefighter who will serve as an academy company officer.

These new career firefighters were hired with funds from the voter-approved levy lid lift in 2023. Two are existing paramedics, one is a current part-time firefighter, while the other two are new to the fire service and will earn their Firefighter 1 certification.

“These firefighters make it possible for us to meet our staffing goals for the Mabana station” Chief Levon Yengoyan said. “We are continuing to work on facility improvements so we can staff the station full-time.”

The new hires will spend three months at the academy beginning in mid-September. After graduation in mid-December, they will rejoin their shifts.

This is also the first time that Camano Fire will send one of its career firefighters to support this academy class. Several local fire agencies share the training costs and contribute the staffing needed to run each three-month academy class.

“Sending an officer to support the academy is a great way to give them more experience in a leadership role,” Chief Yengoyan said. “They’ll get hands-on training in personnel management, performance evaluations, and other management-level training that will benefit our own department.”
