SOUTH WHIDBEY RECORD: Student petition leads to two new courses
South Whidbey High School is introducing two new courses to its curriculum in response to a student-led campaign. The new courses will be Environmental Science and Ethnic Studies.
The Environmental Science class will be a way to get climate change, and all of the various important aspects of global warming into the classroom. It will be an elective for juniors and seniors. The Ethnic Studies class will be required for all freshmen and will focus on “…no longer teach(ing) a white-centric view of the world, its many places, and peoples.” according to a letter sent to the school board.
South Whidbey School District Superintendent Josephine Moccia and the South Whidbey School Board have been working to implement the courses. Superintendent Moccia, in an email to the South Whidbey Record, stated “They (the students) have helped us make significant progress in continuing to offer relevant courses.” For other details, see the story by Karina Andrew in the South Whidbey Record.

- South Whidbey School District Director, Position 2: Andrea Downs (incumbent) vs. Dawn Tarantino
- South Whidbey School District Director, Position 4: Marnie Jackson (incumbent) vs. Lorinda Newton, Farrah Manning Davis, and Emily Uhl
- South Whidbey School District Director, Position 5: Ann Johnson (incumbent) vs. Bree Kramer-Nelson and Greg Dalrymple.
