Earlier this evening we became aware of a possible student-led walkout next week that has been discussed online and within the community.
To be clear, the Stanwood-Camano School District and Stanwood High School are not planning, organizing, or approving this walkout. The event is student-initiated and student-led, and it is not a school-sponsored activity.
When schools become aware that students may engage in a walkout or similar expression during the school day, our responsibility as a public school district is to focus on student safety, supervision, and maintaining a respectful learning environment. We do not take a position on the issues that may motivate student expression. Our role is to ensure that instruction continues for students who remain in class and that campus operations remain safe and orderly for everyone.
Families sometimes ask whether schools can prevent a walkout from occurring. As a public school district, we are required to balance student constitutional rights with our obligation to maintain order and protect the rights of others. Peaceful student expression is protected under the law, which limits the authority schools have to prohibit it outright. However, the district will intervene if behavior becomes unsafe or substantially disrupts learning. This includes responding to actions involving threats, harassment, vandalism, fighting, or other conduct that interferes with the wellbeing of students or staff.
It is also important for families to understand that attendance laws still apply during the school day. Participation in a walkout or leaving class may result in an unexcused absence, consistent with Washington state law and district attendance policies. Families will be notified in accordance with those requirements.
Our priority remains the same every day — keeping schools safe, respectful, and focused on learning. We appreciate our families’ partnership as we support students while also upholding expectations that allow schools to function smoothly for all.
Thank you for your continued support.
