February is #BlackHistoryMonth, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and resilience of African Americans throughout history.
First recognized as a national observance in 1976, the month of February was chosen because it includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two figures whose leadership helped shape the nation during the fight to end slavery.
Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of Black leaders, artists, scientists, and activists whose work continues to influence our society. From the courage of Harriet Tubman and the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr., to the literary voice of Maya Angelou and the scientific contributions of George Washington Carver, Black history is deeply woven into the American story.
Throughout the month, we invite our school community to learn, reflect, and celebrate — including by exploring a wide array of books by Black authors available in our school libraries.
