February is #BlackHistoryMonth, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and resilience of African Americans throughout history. Established as a national observance in 1976, the month of February was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln — figures instrumental in the abolition of slavery.
This month provides an opportunity to reflect on the impact of Black leaders, artists, scientists, and activists who have shaped our society. From the pioneering work of Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. to the artistic influence of Maya Angelou and the scientific contributions of George Washington Carver, Black history is woven into the fabric of American history.
Join us in celebrating Black History Month, including by exploring a wide array of books in our school libraries by Black authors.
