Marie Shimada (D-Freeland), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 1, posted this on her Facebook page on .

Friends,

I hope you all had safe and enjoyable holiday weekends. As we celebrate Labor Day today, it’s a great opportunity for recognition at a local level for our County’s organized and non-organized labor forces, who work year-round to keep our County such an amazing place. I continue to be the only candidate who has been endorsed by current County staff, and it is a privilege to have that trust put into my vision for a better future here.

This Labor Day, however, I am not just reflecting on the past achievements of local workers, I am also contemplating the challenges that lie ahead. Next week, I will convene a meeting with a plethora of restaurant owners and food producers to better understand the frustrations and anxiety many of them are facing with respect to local government. I have appreciated hearing from folks who have already reached out, and I look forward to learning from even more business owners. Economic vitality relies on our local workforce. If our local workforce is suffering, we all are suffering.

I hustled to have this food industry meeting put together because I believe it is the paramount role of elected officials to be responsive to the needs of citizens. This leadership value is what earned me labor endorsements spanning many trades and industries, and I know it’s a value you share with me.

This Labor Day, I hope you spend some time with me (in spirit) to imagine a bright future for our community with a thriving workforce who has access to things like housing and clean water.

In service,
Marie Shimada
