Friends,

On November 6, Kamala Harris addressed the nation by saying “while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.” While the outcome this year, both locally and nationally, was not what we wanted nor what we fought for, now is also not the time for us to give up the fight for a better future for our community.

While we must accept that voters did not vote for progress this year, we must not grow apathetic to the needs of our community members who are feeling left out of local government. We must still fight for local farms, fight for workers and local businesses, and fight for ourselves. We must continue to speak out against abuse of the law, performative politics, and wanton disregard for public interest.

The Friends of Marie Shimada send our best wishes to the Board of Island County Commissioners in upholding the values of our community – all of our community – while reminding our elected officials of the weight of their actions in planning the next two decades of our collective community experiences.

In service,
The Friends of Marie Shimada
