Christina Elliott (D-Oak Harbor), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 2, posted this on her Facebook page on .
I was disappointed at our last candidate forum event when my opponent said her dad paid for her downpayment so she could shop at Nordstrom.
She’s out of touch with the struggle most of us face or have faced, and she’s now doubled down on her NIMBY position that made it so hard for families like yours and mine to move and live here.
Personally, I couldn’t afford to buy the house we’re in if we had to move here today. And I never take it for granted how lucky I am— thanks to a $0 down VA loan— that we were finally able to buy after a lifetime of renting.
My goal is to make homeownership more affordable and accessible to working families in Island County.
I’m also painfully aware of the lack of affordable long term rentals on island, which drove my husband and I to pursue first time homeownership prematurely than we financially felt ready to.
While it’s a beautiful thing to receive such a generous gift as a downpayment for a home, it’s not typical or reasonable for many.
My opponent has had 12 of the best years of interest rates, home prices, real estate endorsements, a real estate family member and access to developers to avoid a local housing squeeze… yet the crisis at hand is apparent to anyone who didn’t get into the housing market before “all this happened.”
A vote for me is a vote for more housing options at all income levels. We cannot thrive as a community without a workforce who lives here 👮⚓️👩🏽⚕️🧑🏼🌾👷🏻♀️👨🏽🔧🧑🏻🚒👩🏻🏫
