I was recently awarded the Dan Evans Award for good environmental policies. I am incredibly thankful for this honor and strive to keep Washington the Evergreen State🌲. Over the last two years, I have passed important legislation to aid in this effort. Senate Bill 5433 gives the Department of Natural Resources the ability and funding to remove derelict aquatic structures. Removing these long-standing hazards from our waterways not only cleans up the water from hazards leaking toxic chemicals but also improves the habitat for wildlife, such as the vulnerable salmon and orca populations. I also passed Senate Bill 5667, which compensates forest owners who voluntarily agree to preserve their small forests adjacent to waterways to protect against land erosion and help regulate the water’s temperature. Both bills were passed unanimously. Additionally, I have secured funding totaling $14.8 million for various environmental clean-up and restoration efforts in our district.
