Infant Deaths After Texas’ 2021 Ban on Abortion in Early Pregnancy

Fact: I am the only pro-choice candidate in the District 2 County Commissioner race.
It’s the reason I received an endorsement from the National Women’s Political Caucus. The JAMA paper that came out yesterday is why any candidate who is anything less than proudly pro-choice won’t fly in this election.
JAMA did a study of the aftermath of Texas’ abortion ban. They found:
• a 22.9% increase in congenital issues (birth defects) in Texas
• compared to a 3.1% DECREASE in birth defects in the 28 control states
• a 12.9% increase in infant mortality
• compared to a 1.8% increase in control states
We must protect women and reproductive rights here in Island County. Reproductive healthcare saves lives and improves quality of life– for women, children and the families who love them.
We’ve already been threatened once with the closure of WhidbeyHealth and specifically the Women’s Health Center. We need to make sure that never happens again.
This cohort study of recorded infant deaths examines infant mortality after the passage of the 2021 ban on early abortions in Texas.
