ISLAND COUNTY: Independence Day “Good Neighbor” Standards (JILL JOHNSON)
Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson (R-Oak Harbor) sent the following email to constituents on Fri., Jun. 30, 2023.
As we approach the 4th of July holiday, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our local COUNTY firework regulations (Linked HERE).
In addition to the legal requirements associated with the discharge of fireworks, it is also important to apply the higher (and arguably more important) “good neighbor” standards. Here are neighborly things to consider before blasting into the holiday weekend:
- If your neighbor has PTSD, has a child with developmental delays including sensitivities to sound and light, young children with strict bedtimes, skittish pets, etc. take time to talk to them about their plans or needs and share your celebration plans with them as well. Working together is key.
- Pick up your litter. Your fun should not create chores for someone else.
- Be aware of safety risks including surrounding vegetation, roofs and structures, and be sensitive to dry conditions. Just because something is legal to do, doesn’t mean it is wise in all circumstances. Safety first.
- If you live next to a VRBO, walk over and introduce yourself to the guests and have a conversation with them about community standards and expectations, let them know about anyone in your neighborhood that is impacted by fireworks, and ask them to respect the culture of the place they are visiting. Most people will be accommodating.
I am sure there are many other “good neighbor” ideas, but the most important thing is to simply communicate with those around you. I believe strongly in the value and importance of celebration and tradition; but more than that, I believe in the importance of community. Strong communities work together and they care about their neighbors. I encourage you to follow the laws AND apply the “good neighbor” standards to your celebrations. This is the best way to ensure the tradition of personal-use fireworks can continue in Island County.
Happy Independence Day!
Jill
