It’s back-to-school season—and there is some great news for working families as the new school year gets started.

College affordability is a major concern for families. Fortunately, our state has a number of programs to help students earn college credit while still in high school. In 2023, I sponsored HB 1361, which expanded funding for Running Start, helping both students and families reduce the costs of college. High school juniors and seniors can now enroll in tuition-free Running Start summer classes at their local community college, in addition to classes offered in the fall, winter, and spring terms. This will help students get a head start on their college education—all while completing their high school graduation requirements.

I also helped pass SB 5048, which eliminated fees for College in the High School. College in the High School allows students to earn college credit without leaving their high school campus, and now this valuable program is free for students and their families.
