Christina Elliott (D-Oak Harbor), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 2, posted this on her Facebook page on .
Let’s talk policy! Today, we’re covering 🤰HEALTHCARE⚕️
I will prioritize expanding healthcare access for all residents, especially our most vulnerable populations, like the elderly and women. I will open my door to substantive work that needs to get done with Island County Public Health, WhidbeyHealth and other local healthcare providers (and potential providers!) to enhance the services and resources available in Island County– including Camano.
Solutions:
1. Collaboration: I will work with Island County Public Health and local healthcare providers to identify gaps in services and develop targeted programs to address them, such as the potential to expand our travel medicine clinic.
2. Resource Expansion: I will seek grant funding and partnerships to expand healthcare resources, including mental health services. Some of our elderly residents are suffering from loneliness while they are quite literally separated from social activities by an island (looking at you Camano). I aim to provide opportunities to connect more residents to IC senior resources, no matter where in the county they live.
3. Community health: I will implement initiatives to ensure all community members have access to necessary medical care, promoting a healthier overall population. We enjoy a large population of small businesses, artists, writers and other self-employed individuals. The economy only works when we do, so let’s keep everyone healthy.
4. Women’s health: I am the only pro-choice candidate in my race (D2), and the only one endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Alliance. I have been and will be a champion for women’s healthcare at the county level, and I will advocate to protect women’s and family resources at the state and national levels when acting as a representative of Island County in those respective spheres.
5. Childcare: I believe childcare is an essential health service the county must subsidize or otherwise provide in order to benefit all working families. This will help our local economy thrive, and put more women– who are disproportionately the primary caregiver– back in the workplace if they desire to be there.
