The Oak Harbor School District posted this in the news section of their website on Wed., Feb. 28, 2024.

Dear OHPS Staff and Families,

As we celebrate the recent passing of the 100th day of school, it’s a moment of great excitement, particularly for our little ones. For us adults within the system, it marks the anticipation of longer days filled with warmer weather and sunshine.

Over the past year, our focus has been on crafting a comprehensive district strategic plan that is deeply rooted in student voices and committed to ensuring every student feels valued and achieves success.

This plan serves as our guiding blueprint, directing our collective vision, establishing accountable goals, prioritizing funding and initiatives, and fostering unity within our school community across the district. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the 400 staff members who played pivotal roles in elevating student voices during the development of our strategic plan. This truly exemplifies the spirit of #OneOakHarbor. While this update only scratches the surface of our ongoing efforts, I hope it sheds light on the creativity and collaboration flourishing within our system. We will continue to provide regular updates on our website.

Developing a comprehensive blueprint for our district while simultaneously navigating budget reductions is indeed a delicate balancing act. Like many districts in our region and across the state, we anticipate challenging times ahead. However, I am unwavering in my confidence that our strategic planning process will guide us to align our efforts effectively, maximize resources and prioritize outcomes. Our shared urgency to provide the best possible educational experience for all our students will drive our decisions and actions.

To address our budgetary constraints, we have recently established a Small Teams Budget Advisory Committee comprising of representatives from our labor partners, cabinet members, parents, and a student. This committee will work diligently to identify priorities aligned with our strategic plan, guiding our reduction process for the adoption of our 2024-2025 annual operating budget. We are committed to keeping you informed with regular budget updates throughout this process.

Your unwavering dedication to embracing opportunities for learning and growth, along with your resilience, inspire me every day. I am confident that together, Oak Harbor Public Schools can overcome any challenges that lie ahead.

Sincerely,

Michelle Kuss-Cybula, Ed.D.,
OHPS Superintendent
