Power Outage Safety Tips from Fire Chief Anderson

Estimated Restoration Time: Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is continuing to update its website with information about when power will be restored. You can follow and report outages online at https://www.pse.com/en/outage/outage-map

Key Safety Tips During the Outage:
• Generators:
◦ Use a generator outdoors on stable ground, at least 20 feet away from windows and vents, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
◦ Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
• Electrical Safety:
◦ Unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges.
◦ Stay at least 35 feet away from fallen power lines and anything they’re touching. Call 911to report downed lines.
• Driving Caution:
◦ Drive cautiously, as there may be downed trees, utility poles, or debris on roads.
◦ Treat all intersections with non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops.
◦ Avoid driving if possible; staying home is the safest option during outages.
• Food Safety:
◦ Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
◦ A closed refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer maintains temperature for 48 hours.
◦ If food is 40°F or warmer (especially dairy and meat), throw it out to prevent foodborne illness.
• Device Battery Life:
◦ Keep cell phones and tablets charged.
◦ Save battery by turning on low power mode and turning off unused apps and data.
• Stay Informed:
◦ check updates via PSE’s Outage Map.
• Check on Neighbors:
◦ Ensure the safety of elderly neighbors or those with special needs. If you or a loved one relies on medical equipment dependent on power and need assistance, call 911
