Christina Elliott (D-Oak Harbor), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 2, posted this on her Facebook page on .
Did you know the nearest men’s DV shelter for Island County residents is in… Tacoma?! That is completely unacceptable. Statistically, ~32% of DV victims are male in Washington state.
DV, or “intimate partner violence” (IPV) is also statistically more prevalent in military towns. [sources cited below]
CADA, our local DV resource, is doing a phenomenal job with the limited resources they have, but their funding is taking a huge federal haircut in the next year. The lack of DV resources on Island County hurts all of us.
Imagine seeking help in one of the most vulnerable situations in your life, and even if there is room with all the men you’re competing with from the greater Seattle area, you have to head down to Tacoma, possibly with no means or understanding of how to get back to your home on Island.
There is a chance for Island County to do something about this. This is a community resource that would percolate up and benefit all of us.
There is a chance for Island County to put themselves on the map as a champion for DV victims and men’s health, but only if you have leaders willing to lead this charge. I am here for it.
I am dedicated to doing everything I can to work with local groups that already have the inroads to make this happen if I am elected as a commissioner.
If you agree we need more mental health resources, especially for our men, share this post with a friend.
