Before the Deception Pass bridge was built in 1935, sternwheeler passenger ferries like the Fairhaven were Whidbey Island’s link to the mainland and regional towns. The Fairhaven was part of the Mosquito Fleet, which traversed the Puget Sound and played a vital role in the early development of the Pacific Northwest.
