Remembering Dr. Paul “Doc Z” Zaveruha

Paul A. Zaveruha, MD, FACS, MPH
November 19, 1945 – December 31, 2024

A trailblazer, pioneer and tireless advocate for accessible healthcare on Whidbey Island, Doc Z settled in Oak Harbor with his young family and surgical practice in 1981. Since then, he has been deeply involved in the Island’s traumas and emergencies, ensuring that his neighbors and community had the best and most accessible healthcare available to them. Not just an advocate, Doc Z was one of the creators of the Whidbey Island Emergency Medical Services program, bringing the island its own dedicated team of Paramedics and EMTs. He served as the WhidbeyHealth EMS’s program medical director for more than 40 years. In addition to his dedication to Whidbey Island, Doc Z cared for patients. It’s safe to say that without Dr. Zevareuha it’s uncertain when EMS services would have become available on our rural rock.

A memorial service is in the process of being set up to honor the man and his legacy, with a tentative March 2025 date. Remembrances’ may be given to the Island County Emergency Services in his name.
