SOUTH WHIDBEY RECORD: Langley Council members clash over need for fourth officer, advisory committee
In a 4-1 vote Langley City Councilmembers declined to establish a committee that would determine whether or not the city should hire a fourth police officer. The council also adopted a budget amendment that funds a fourth police officer.
Councilmember Craig Cyr called for the establishment of the committee while presenting numerous data points he collected from various sources that seemed to argue against the city hiring a fourth police officer. The other City Councilmembers were skeptical of his research and shut down his proposal for a committee. Councilmember Thomas Gill said the data didn’t seem to be “remotely right.” Councilmember Peter Morton said it seemed that Cyr had “cherry-picked” the data and that some of it was a “cheap shot.” Regarding Cyr’s estimated steep price tag for a new officer, Councilmember Dominique Emerson said she sees it as an investment. Councilmember Christy Korrow said the conversation was making her uncomfortable. See Kira Erickson’s story for all the details.
