Island County commissioners met Jan. 24 to dole out this year’s dollars to organizations that support commerce and events on Camano and Whidbey islands.

Camano Island Fire and Rescue is considering a levy lift to help the district deal with an increasing volume of emergency medical calls.
Ballots from Tuesday’s general election are being counted, with races on Island and Snohomish county ballots still be determined. As of Tuesday night, Snohomish County had counted 184,877 ballots and Island County 25,956.
Kelly Todd Mauck, a Republican, and Theodore James Kubisiak, who does not identify with a party, are battling in the Island County assessor race to replace Bernie Upchurch, who is not running for re-election.
Island County Commissioner Janet St. Clair (D-Camano Island) said she wants to continue working on issues like broadband access and climate change. Timothy Hazelo (R-Oak Harbor), her challenger, said he seeks a future with fewer social programs and more of an emphasis on public safety.
Island County became the second county in Washington to pass a climate change resolution. The Island County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the measure on Sept. 6.
