Christina Elliott (D-Oak Harbor), candidate for Island County Commissioner, District 2, posted this on her Facebook page on .
The reason I’m running is because I experienced our housing crisis firsthand when I moved here. As a lifelong renter, I found our options limited. We took the plunge and bought our first house here, going from finding the listing to offer in less time than it takes to cook a dinner. When we finally closed, we got to see the house for the first time and it was full of mold. Sadly, our story is not unique, and we are one of the lucky ones because we were able to buy.
The solution to the housing crisis here is simple, but it’s not easy: we must build more dwellings. This will come with its own set of benefits and challenges, but we cannot ignore this problem any longer. When our workforce is commuting from Burlington and Everett, we are asking too much of them.
I will work to make accessory dwelling units (ADUs) a functional reality as a mid-term solution. I will also work with our cities to concentrate density there to preserve our rural character, provide easier access to our infrastructure, give equitable access to resources and jobs for those who do not have cars so that they can utilize Island Transit, and create more demand on our main streets for local food and fare with more people living nearby these businesses every day.
