This year marks the Port of Coupeville’s 60th Anniversary (1966 – 2026). We’ll be sharing highlights from the past six decades – including the role that ports play in communities across the state. Did you know there are 75 ports in Washington? There’s a port in 33 of the state’s 39 counties!
“Public Benefit From Public Resources” – In 1911, the WA legislature passed the Port District Act that allowed formation of port districts governed by elected commissioners. The Port of Seattle was the state’s first port.
Many associate ports with deep harbors, but ports also include rivers, airports, agricultural facilities, and industrial parks. All ports’ purpose is to develop economic opportunities specific to the communities they serve. Here’s a brief look at WA ports, and you can find more on the WA Public Ports Association website:
